Cedar Soffits and Deep Ocean Hardie Plank

Details, Details, Details…

For this bungalow with a walkout basement, we removed old vinyl siding and installed HardiePlank lap siding in Deep Ocean with custom painted Deep Ocean corner and window trims. The siding looks fantastic, but the real star of the show here is the stained cedar soffits!

A few carefully considered details can make all the difference when it comes to exterior design! There are a few excellent examples on this project:

·         Drip caps: Take a look at the windows in the pictures. Do you notice the flashing protecting the windows? Not really? That’s because we specifically used drip cap flashing that is the closest possible colour match to the siding and trim boards. Most other contractors just use white flashing and call it “good enough”. Imagine how much of an eyesore that would be on a house like this!

·         Soffit stain: Check out the colour of the soffits. The customer selected a reddish stain for the cedar, which ties in beautifully with the original red brickwork in the front.

·         Yellow accents: You couldn’t possibly miss the yellow house numbers and front door! The key here is that the yellow is just a small pop of colour: you wouldn’t want to overuse it! But the result here is a perfect accent.

·         Black soffit trims: We used custom made metal trims for the seams and vent strips in the soffits. Because the soffits on this home weren’t originally perfectly level, we knew we’d need an accessory trim to hide the difference in the angled corners. This small trim ensures that the lines are straight in all the right places.
