We are proud and excited to announce that as of March 2020, Blue Jay Exterior Renovations is a member of the Siding Contractors Association of Alberta. What does this organization do, and why did we decide to become a part of it?
While we worked as local reps for James Hardie, part of our job was to represent the company at monthly Siding Contractors Association of Alberta (SCAA) meetings. The SCAA is a trade organization made up of reputable siding contractors, with some distributors and manufacturers also counting as members. The SCAA works on behalf of the siding industry as a whole in Alberta, including work to improve training programs and installation details, and to establish occupational status for siding installers in Alberta.
One of the most remarkable features of the SCAA is how competing contractors get together for a monthly meeting to discuss the challenges they are facing, and how we as an industry can share best practices and improve the trade as a whole. The meetings are usually productive and interesting, and the SCAA board schedules guest speakers to inform and educate the membership about changes to building codes and accepted best practices in building envelope engineering.
There are 29 contractor members of the SCAA, 16 in the south region and 13 in the north region. The association estimates that somewhere between 75% and 85% of all the siding installed in Alberta in a given year is installed by an SCAA member contractor.
Why We Joined the Siding Contractors Association of Alberta:
The siding industry in Edmonton has given us so much, including the opportunity to run our own business and support our families without having to rely on a paycheque from a massive corporation. We are excited to be able to give back and help the industry in whatever way we can.
We also feel that it’s important to represent the renovation industry in this association. Almost all of the members across the province focus only on new construction siding installations, and we can be a voice for renovation siding contractors and installers within the SCAA. Since so many of the SCAA’s members are new construction focused, we can make sure that the renovation side of the industry doesn’t get left behind.
