Versetta Stone & Boothbay Blue Hardie Renovation
A stunning combination of Boothbay Blue Hardie Plank and corner trims, along with Arctic White Hardie Trims at windows and a brilliant Versetta Stone accent by the front entrance!
This classic bungalow was completely transformed! The original siding and stucco held up well, but were beginning to show signs of wear, and the homeowners were also looking to improve the home’s energy efficiency. So we tackled both at once!
On the front of the home, we removed the original siding. Once the siding was off, we took the time to make sure everything was in good condition (it was!), before installing a peel and stick membrane around the windows and door. This moisture proof membrane is also an airtight seal - helping to keep warm air in the home in the winter, and cool air in the summer.
After installing new flashings, a layer of Tyvek Drainwrap, and working to update the front to today’s building code, we added a 1” layer of Enerspan insulation. This 1” layer of insulation is an added R5 of thermal value - a 40-50% increase in the R value of the walls in a typical 2x4 home from that time!
The existing stucco stayed on, and we installed our siding and insulation over top. And while Hardie siding can be installed directly over top of 1” insulation without strapping - that is not the case in an over-stucco application. So we first installed our insulation in a continuous layer over the stucco (to minimize thermal breaks), and then installed pressure treated wood strapping over top of the insulation. That strapping was attached with structural screws, which penetrated through the insulation, stucco, and sheathing, into the existing studs.
Once the insulation (and strapping, in the stucco sections) were installed, it was time for siding! The homeowners made some absolutely wonderful design decisions - starting with Boothbay Blue Hardie Plank for the siding, and matching Hardie Trims on the corners. They accentuated the white windows with a white Hardie Trim, tying in visually with their soffit, fascia, and eavestrough.
And finally, the Versetta Stone accent at the front entrance is the cherry on top! Mission Point Versetta Ledgestone is the perfect pairing for the Boothbay Blue - a stunning feature for anyone walking in.
