Edmonton Homeowners Can Get All They Need With A Complete Exterior Makeover
Gorgeous Siding Is A Nice Start, But Blue Jay Can Take Your Project To The Next Level
Like most homeowners, you probably think of home siding renovation as little more than new siding with proper flashing and good seals – but that’s just the beginning.
Your Edmonton area home’s exterior has many more features to consider to get that truly finished look. Plus, you can even help cut down your energy bills with our breathable exterior insulation.
That’s where our complete exterior siding makeover comes into play. At Blue Jay Exterior Renovations, we love giving our customers’ homes a great new look that matches their taste. So, we offer several options to help get you the look you want with the quality you expect.
Complete Your Home’s New Exterior
Often, homeowners will focus on replacing their siding and ignore other visible elements of their home’s exterior.
What elements?
Well, there’s your soffit and fascia, for starters. Then there’s your eavestroughs to consider, downspouts that could match your new siding or trim, and the idea of adding exterior insulation for added energy efficiency for your whole home.
While these are all optional features of a siding renovation, including them will give you the best overall look and the longest-lasting results..
Soffit
When we talk about soffits, we’re usually referring to the underside of a roof or deck overhang. Most houses in Edmonton will have soffits above their exterior walls, but some older homes from the 1940s and 50s don’t!
Take a good look at your soffits – are they looking their best, or are they caked with decades of dirt and dust that resists any attempts to clean them? Or worse yet, are your soffits just a sheet of solid plywood with flaking paint and a few old, plugged-up vents?
Blue Jay offers aluminum soffits with built-in ventilation in dozens of factory colours, so you’ll have no trouble picking the perfect colour contrast (or colour match!) to make your exterior design truly your own.
And when we install vented aluminum soffits over old plywood, we don’t just “cover it up” – we’ll cut in large vent holes first to make sure that you’ve got plenty of airflow to reduce the risk of moisture problems in your attic.
Fascia
Your fascia boards are one of the hardest working components of your entire exterior. That’s because your fascia borders the roof and protects the edges of your roof trusses and gable ends from all the rain, wind, and hail that runs off them.
All this weather takes a toll after a while, so older aluminum fascia is usually dented and faded. And the wooden boards under the aluminum cladding are often stained (or even rotten) from relentless water exposure.
Rotten wood at your fascia means that your eavestroughs don’t have solid wood to hang from, so you’ll sometimes see gutters on older homes sagging under the weight of snow and ice. And since rot damage has a tendency to spread if it isn’t fixed, rotten fascia can eventually lead to rotten roof trusses.
So, new fascia doesn’t just perfectly finish off the look of your new exterior – it serves an important purpose, too!
Eavestroughs
Few Edmonton area homeowners give their eavestroughs any thought until there’s a problem. But when you’re performing a complete siding makeover, it’s the perfect time to replace your old eavestroughs with new, seamless ones that match the look you want.
Older eavestrough systems are often leaky because the sealant that holds the corners and end caps together has long since failed. And old downspouts are almost always dented, split, and otherwise beat from years of getting kicked around and stepped on.
White gutters and downspouts are still the most popular, but they’re not your only option anymore! Today, you have a world of colours to choose from to ensure your eavestroughs either blend in or become a contrasting feature to your home’s new look..
Exterior Insulation
Step one of any siding renovation is to remove the old material, often going down to the bare wood sheathing on the exterior of your home (unless we’re covering up your old stucco instead of removing it!). This gives you a great opportunity to make your home more energy-efficient by installing exterior insulation.
We can install breathable insulation on just about any siding renovation - from a modest R 3.5 all the way up to a truly cozy R 16 insulation boost!
Unlike some exterior insulation products, our breathable foam panels allow moisture vapour to escape from your walls. And unlike some contractors, Blue Jay always installs exterior insulation overtop of a special drainable Tyvek wrap.
Thorough Installation
Many think siding is siding is siding. It isn’t. Different manufacturers use different methods. Take James Hardie – their installation manual is over 100 pages long. And if you think a crew can guess their way through it and get good results, prepare for an unpleasant surprise.
(At Blue Jay, our co-owner started his career in the siding industry as James Hardie’s technical expert for Alberta.)
In fact, we don’t install any product we aren’t experts on. It wouldn’t be fair to you or, frankly, our workers. And that’s just not how we roll.
A Total Exterior Makeover Is The Complete Package
A siding renovation is a major investment, a lot like buying a new car. And, like that new car, you want your purchase to last as long as possible. For a car, that means quality parts, careful manufacturing, and regular maintenance.
For siding, it’s a little simpler. We’ve only got two things to worry about: the quality of the materials and the craftsmanship of the installation.
Top-Notch Materials
We never price shop – we shop for top value.
What does that mean?
It means that we look for materials that last, systems that are well-designed, and service at the manufacturer level that is exceptional. For example, there is a local vinyl siding supplier that has a manufacturing facility right here in Alberta… we refuse to install their products.
In short, their standards of service and manufacturing don’t come close to meeting ours.
Instead, we use higher-quality vinyl manufacturers with materials brought in from Ontario. Would you hire a contractor that installs whatever siding happens to be close by, no matter the quality? Or would you rather hire someone who goes the extra mile to make sure that you get the best quality materials?
A Complete System
Siding, as you’ve learned, isn’t the whole story. There’s fascia, soffit, exterior insulation, and eavestroughs to consider, too.
Some of these may feel like style options, but each can impact the lifespan of your home.
Ugly plywood soffits can choke your attic ventilation, leading to moisture buildup and damage to your roof deck- while rotten fascia can cause problems for both your eavestroughs AND your roof structure.
Undersized and leaky old eavestroughs lead to ice buildup in the wintertime. And wouldn’t it be nice if that downspout that you keep tripping on was on the other side of the yard?
While exterior insulation won’t change the function of your new siding, it will make you more comfortable in your home no matter what temperature it is outside, and the savings on your energy bills will be a nice bonus!
Why Blue Jay Stands Out From The Crowd
So what makes Blue Jay Exterior Renovations so special? Well, we always act with integrity, sweat the small stuff, keep you in the loop, and more. We’re a homeowners only company that owes its success to remarkable customer service that will absolutely blow you away.
Only Siding (Not “And Siding”)
For most contractors in the Edmonton area, home siding is an add-on. They’ll pick up a siding job here and there, but never enough to make them experts.
At Blue Jay, siding is all we do. Our skills, processes, and designs are all geared toward giving you the very best results from your siding replacement. We know our products inside and out, have great relationships with our manufacturers, and have your back before, during, and after your restoration is complete.
An Honest Payment Process
Too often, Edmonton area homeowners are asked to pay for work that has yet to be done. At Blue Jay, we look at things differently. We prove our efforts before we ask for a dime. We call this our “Proof Before Pay” system.
You pay in three installments, with the first bill coming after all your materials are on site and our crews have started to work. The second invoice is due when the project is complete. And your final payment is due only after you’ve approved every square foot of your new siding and your yard is back to the way we found it.
Integrity. Reliability. Service.
We owe our success to our core values. We’re known for our honesty, friendliness, and reliable nature. Edmonton area homeowners know that when they reach out to Blue Jay, what they see is what they get.
No games. No tricks. Just great service backed by even better installations of high-quality products.
Crystal-Clear Communication
When it comes to siding renovations, keeping in touch is the key to a smooth process. There are a lot of moving parts, which means multiple opportunities for confusion and delays. We’ve built a system that ensures you’re in the loop at all times.
On top of that, we check and double-check the details at every step to ensure all goes as planned. We’ll never leave you in the dark or attempt to guess our way to success. Each move we make is deliberate and communicated to you clearly..
Detail Fanatics
A siding renovation is a big project, but it can be completely undone by the smallest mistakes. The wrong flashing, rot damage that’s hidden rather than fixed, or even incorrect nailing can shorten the life span of your project by years.
So, we take extra care to ensure every last detail is absolutely correct before we move on to the next step. We do it with daily site visits, final inspections, and, of course, the excellent training and support we give to every crew member. Nothing is left to chance.
We love getting feedback from our Edmonton area clients. It shows us that we’re doing something right and lets you get a better idea of what Blue Jay Exterior Renovations is all about.
