Red Exterior with Black Trims

Like anything, a great exterior renovation comes down to the details.

For this project, our clients came to us asking for a replacement of their original cedar siding, which was at the end of its lifespan. At the same time, they were interested in improving the insulation in the exterior walls, so they decided to add a 1.5” thick layer of IKO EnerAir insulation to the project.

The design the clients chose is elegant and timeless. Countrylane Red HardiePlank lap siding is a perfect match for the existing brick, and black window and fascia trim finish the home with a bold accent.

To discuss the details, first we would like to direct your attention to the dormers on the front of the home (the three sections of the home that are built out through the roof). To cover up the old galvanized roof flashing, we always install new painted steel flashings. Technically they are part of the roof package, but roofers can’t change these flashings as they are tied in to the siding assembly. Most contractors shave some dollars off the price of the job by just leaving the original flashings, but it just doesn’t look good.

Next, take a look at the careful trim work on the front bay windows. Perfectly cut and installed trim boards match the panels exactly, and are the right complement for the front of this home.

Finally, an important detail that you can’t even see from the street. Since the project uses 1.5” insulation, James Hardie’s installation instructions require us to install wood strapping for the siding attachment surface. We’ve installed pressure treated wood strapping here, with structural screws terminating into the studs. Strapping is a costly line item in the final total, but if this step is missed the entire assembly could be in jeopardy.
