Evening Blue Hardie and Exterior Insulation Renovation

New Hardie Board Cement siding and exterior insulation make this home cozy and beautiful, all year round

The owners of this south Edmonton bungalow loved their home, but they didn’t love the way it looked. They also didn’t love how cold and drafty it felt in the winter time, and how hot and stuffy it got on hot days. Eventually, they decided to call Blue Jay for a consultation, and before long we had settled on a scope of work.

First, we removed the power blue vertical cedar siding on the front walls of the home, and replaced the old tar paper with new Tyvek Drain Wrap underlayment. (We always use Drain Wrap when we install rigid insulation panels, because it gives any condensation a path to safely drain away from the wall.)

Next, we installed the insulation layer - 2 inches of EnerSpan graphene infused expanded polystyrene (also known as GPS). We believe that GPS is the best insulation product for the Alberta climate because it offers a relatively high R-value per inch when compared to standard white EPS styrofoam, and the R-value remains stable at all temperatures. Some insulation products actually lose a big chunk of their insulation value on cold days!

The next step was to install pressure treated wood strapping so we had a solid surface for attaching the fiber cement board siding. The clients selected James Hardie’s HardiePlank siding in Evening Blue, and wood composite Smart Trim boards. The corner posts are Evening Blue like the siding, and the window trims are Snowscape White.
