Gentek Pearl Siding Renovation

Two different colours of Gentek siding and a Versetta Stone accent for a standout finish!

Technically we replaced vinyl siding with new vinyl siding - but the finished look is night and day on this one! After removing the existing vinyl (and old exterior insulation and weather barrier), we got back to the original sheathing to make sure everything was in good shape.

After determining that the walls were indeed in good condition, we started our installation with a peel and stick membrane around the doors & windows. Our peel and stick application is a moisture proof membrane, and also an airtight seal - helping your furnace keep warm air in during the Winter, and helping to keep cooler air in in the summer too!
Following the application of the peel and stick membrane, we installed new flashings up to today’s building code, and a layer of Tyvek Drainwrap. Drainwrap is Tyvek’s recommended product behind exterior insulation, providing excellent drainage for moisture behind the rigid insulation panels.

Once the new weather barrier was installed, we put on a 1” layer of Plastifab Enerspan insulation providing an additional R5 to the walls of the home. For a home from this era, that represents a roughly 40-50% increase in total R value, with the added benefit of a continuous application - no thermal breaks at studs.

Gentek Pearl siding in a traditional profile was selected as the main siding colour, and it looks perfect against the white windows and soffit/fascia/eaves - dark enough for a contrast, but light enough to not get into a dark shade that the homeowners wanted to avoid. And while the majority of siding does run horizontal, the angles of the bow window are too much for a horizontal siding - as such, we used a board and batten (also in Pearl). It allows the siding to still be on the same maintenance cycle, but also provides a dynamic change of texture.
A beautiful Hardie accent trim separates the gable siding, which was done in Gentek’s Dover Gray - a beautiful complement to the Pearl siding below.

Finally, we’ve got the Versetta Stone accent. Sterling was selected for the colour, and it ties in neatly with the grays above it while also providing a darker contrast.
