Big time siding transformation with an even bigger insulation upgrade!

It’s easy to get caught up in how phenomenal this home looks, but it’s got even more going on under the hood!

We removed the original wood siding and installed 3” of Enerspan rigid insulation on top of the existing stucco for an added R value of 14.1 to the walls. To put that into context, the average 2x4 home from the era has roughly R10 in the walls currently. So the exterior insulation here is adding an approximate 140% more thermal value to the walls, exceeding the code for a new home built today.
Pair that with the fact that our exterior insulation spans over top of the studs (as opposed to in-wall insulation, which has a thermal break at each stud), and you’ve got a seriously warm home this Winter! Plus, Enerspan works just as well in the Summer, so you don’t have to worry about keeping things cool during one of our July/August heat waves.

Because the insulation was so thick, we installed wood strapping over top of the insulation. The strapping is fastened through the insulation and sheathing with structural screws directly into the existing studs, allowing for the siding to be attached securely - even over a thick layer of a non-structural substrate like a 3” insulation.

Beyond the major insulation upgrade, this is just a seriously beautiful home. Shamrock vinyl siding in a traditional profile from Royal looks absolutely gorgeous as the main siding, and it pairs perfectly with the new wood look accent in the gable.
Here, Tando Building Products’ Beach House Shake in Pacifica was used, and we couldn’t be more in love with the finish. It’s the classic stained wood-look that you’d want in that gable, without wasting a single Summer day maintaining it.

The white corner posts complement the new white soffit/fascia/eavestrough perfectly, tying everything together to make one beautiful bungalow. Beyond the better ventilation and water flow that the new soffit/fascia/eaves system offers, it also allowed us to move one of the downspouts off the front of the house and to the side - a cleaner look that let’s the siding do more of the talking.
