Mitten Vinyl Siding Renovation in Indigo

A charming looking renovation of a classic exterior!

We had a blast collaborating with the homeowners on this project, working to update the building envelope, improve the siding installation, and retain the charm of the original exterior design. The existing siding was starting to show some signs of wear and tear, and certain panels hadn’t been installed securely and were struggling to keep up with heavier windstorms. So the homeowners set about to replace their siding and modernize the design at the same time.

After removing the original siding, we worked to update the building envelope to today’s standards, and make it tighter than it was before. That starts with the peel and stick membrane we installed at every window and door, lapping the air tight seal from the sheathing on to the jambs of the windows/doors. This non-permeable seal means less air exchanges year round, helping keep warm air in the home in the Winter, and cool air in in the Summer.
Next we replaced the original paper with a brand new layer of Tyvek Homewrap. Lapped properly and taped at seams, helping to further increase the air tightness of the home.

For the new siding, the homeowners selected one of our favourites - Mitten Indigo. A beautiful mid blue that fits in every neighbourhood, it lets the white accents of the original design really “pop” in a way they couldn’t before. Check out the triangular louvres at the top of both front gables in the before and afters to see what we mean - what once blended in amongst the light gray exterior is now a standout feature.

In place of the original scalloped shakes is a board and batten accent, in Mitten Ash. Ash is the perfect complement to Indigo, and the board and batten accent still gives a texture variation from the horizontal siding (like the scalloped shingles used to), but with a modern style.

In place of the original wood trims (on the corners, around windows/doors, and to separate accents), we installed Hardie Trim. For a very similar cost, Hardie Trim provides a significantly reduced maintenance cycle - meaning no more climbing up ladders for Spring touch ups!

You can tell the homeowners nailed the final selections and design when the finished exterior is both a big change, and also looks like it was meant for the original design of the home. A gorgeous exterior renovation that we are happy to have been a part of!
