Monterey Taupe Hardie Siding Renovation

A beautiful Hardie siding renovation in Monterey Taupe, with custom painted Hardie Trim matching the original wood trims of the home.

The wonderful owners of this beautiful wood sided home absolutely loved the house, but did not care for the maintenance of the exterior, nor did they love how hot their bedrooms got during Summer heat waves. So we planned to address both of these issues for them with their exterior renovation.

The original wood siding and trims were removed, and following that we began re-wrapping the house and updating to today’s building code where possible. Tyvek Drainwrap was used in place of the original black paper, and a peel and stick membrane installed at windows/doors helped ensure that the cold air they did get into the house actually stayed their thoughout the day during Summer heat waves (and of course it helps keep warm air in during the Winter too!).
After re-wrapping the house, we installed a 1” layer of Enerspan insulation. At R5, a 1” layer of Enerspan offers a roughly 40-50% increase in total R value on the exterior walls. A significant upgrade over the original R value, particular when you consider that our exterior insulation spans over top of the studs (as opposed to the existing in-wall insulation, which has thermal breaks at every single stud).

1” of insulation is the maximum R value per dollar you will receive for a Hardie siding project, as it is the most insulation we can add behind the siding before we need to add strapping. We still had to do some additional detailing around penetrations and openings like utilities and windows to accommodate the additional depth, but the insulation was added with minimal extra costs beyond the insulation itself.

The new Hardie Plank siding in Monterey Taupe looks phenomenal on the home, and the custom painted trims matched the wood trim colour that was on the existing windows. All-in, you’ve got a beautiful, low maintenance, exterior that is built to perform in our harsh exterior climate.
