Mitten Muskoka Green Siding Renovation

Covering up ugly old stucco

For this project, we installed Mitten vinyl siding in Muskoka Green over the existing stucco to create this stunning transformation. 3/4” Enerspan GPS insulation is installed over the stucco to better insulate the home (R 3.5) and provide a forgiving and level backing for the new siding. Aluminum cladding (colour: Nutmeg) at windows and doors adds to the look and provides additional depth for the insulation.

The Nutmeg aluminum window cladding was a necessary inclusion for the project, as the 1.75” siding and insulation buildout would have stuck out around the windows and doors in a very unattractive way. We installed 2x4 lumber around the existing window frames, and covered the wood with custom fabricated aluminum pieces (also called brake shapes) that protect the wood from the sun. Caulking at the perimeter keeps out any moisture, and the end result is a functional and beautiful trim product around the openings.

One important factor to consider for any siding renovation covering existing stucco: the sheathing. This home was originally built with fiberboard sheathing (also known as “buffalo board”). Unlike plywood, fiberboard doesn’t have any structural holding power for nails or screws. This means that in order to install the siding, we must make sure that every nail goes through the stucco and into a stud. At corners, windows, and doors, we must install additional wood strapping so we have enough backing for our vinyl trims as well as the last nail for the siding - the studs in the wall aren’t wide enough for both!
