Replacing Knockdown Stucco with Hardie Board

Removing three layers of stucco and siding before getting a start on the installation for this project made for a stunning transformation. We installed Boothbay Blue Hardie Plank, Shingle, and Panel over of 1” of IKO EnerAir Insulation, and finished it off with 3.5” Arctic White Hardie Trim accents.

This home was originally clad in wood siding, and later had pebble dash stucco installed over top. At some point after that, a “knockdown” style of stucco was installed over the pebble dash. If you look at the before photos, you’ll also notice that the home featured large column build outs at corners, which we also removed prior to installing our siding.

The aesthetic result of the renovation is a remarkable one: the home looks brand new. Boothbay Blue is always a great pick, rich in colour but not too dark or too light. The Arctic White trims add significant depth to the windows and the shadowband on the upper gable. Of course, the colour matched shake and panel help to add additional layers of interest to the design as well.

But with this project, we have more than just the beautiful new siding to be excited about! Because of the multiple layers of existing siding, we had room to install a full 1” IKO EnerAir insulation behind the Hardie, adding an approximate R6 of thermal value to the walls. Since all the existing siding was removed, we were able to identify and replace rotten studs and sheathing that were only going to get worse over time.
