Royal Blue Gray Siding Renovation
A beautiful new exterior combined with an energy efficient wall assembly - that sounds like a win!
The wonderful homeowners on this exciting project were planning to replace their windows as well as their siding, and wanted to add exterior insulation as part of the project. Working with them, we were able to advise their window company of the appropriate build out for the new windows (more on that here, if you’re interested). Doing so allowed us to install a 1.625” (R7.6) Enerspan insulation over top of the original stucco with minimal extra detailing to accommodate all of that extra depth being added.
An older 2x4 home like this was built to an R12, and the audit reports we see would generally find the existing insulation performing at an R10 or R11 (a little less than the original R12, as the insulation has settled over time). So that additional R7.6 insulation is a roughly 70% increase in total R value being added to the walls - a massive increase for comfort, energy efficiency, and utility savings.
And, because our exterior insulation is installed in a continuous layer (and not broken up by each stud, like the existing insulation inside the wall cavities), we’re greatly helping to eliminate cold spots on the home. No more drafty rooms and no more frost along the baseboards in the winter!
Because we were installing that layer of insulation over a layer of stucco, we needed to add wood strapping for secure attachment of the siding. Pressure treated wood was fastened over a continuous layer of the insulation, through the existing stucco, and into the existing framing with structural screws. Then we installed the new siding - in gorgeous Blue Gray from Royal on the strapping.
Blue Gray provided a bright and cheery finish for the exterior, that the original stucco was simply lacking. The homeowners selected white corner posts for their siding, which tie in perfectly with the bright white of their new windows.
The white board and batten accent looks great with the new bay window as well. All in the, the new exterior design is simply charming! And best of all - it still looks like it was meant for the original design of the home. The new exterior is energy efficient, beautiful, and built for the long term.
