Every year, we see new manufacturers pop up with some new product. Usually they don’t have Canadian construction code approvals, and they almost never have testing or other proof that their materials can survive Edmonton’s unique climate. (There’s not too many places on earth where you can get -40 and +40 in the same year). The sales reps always want to offer us a great deal on product to “try it out”, but we’d rather not use our customers’ homes as guinea pigs!
And even though our competitors may install some of the same siding materials we do, there’s still a difference in the accessories and installation methods. Many companies cut corners by using cheaper, builder-grade accessories like trim, nails, and flashing. These cost-cutting measures will compromise the long-term durability and appearance of your siding over time, probably just after your workmanship warranty has expired.

James Hardie is the leading manufacturer of fiber cement siding, and for good reason!
Their largest fiber cement competitor (Certainteed) paid out a multi-million dollar class action lawsuit in Canada due to the failures of their product in cold climates. Later on, James Hardie’s next biggest competitor (Allura) purchased the manufacturing plants and processes used by Certainteed.
At Blue Jay we don’t ever want to roll the dice on an unproven product for one of our clients’ homes. We choose to work exclusively with the one fiber cement product proven to last in our climate: Hardie board.
