Maintaining a Stunning Design While Updating Materials
Renovating your exterior doesn’t have to mean changing the design...
Sometimes the design is perfect - it’s just the materials or the installation that aren’t.
When that’s the case, we help work towards updating the materials to better protect the home and limit future maintenance. This unique and beautiful house was built with wood siding, but after 20 years in Alberta weather it needed some love.
Traditional profile vinyl siding was a natural fit to replace the narrow width of the original wood siding, and similarly, vinyl board and batten was very close to the original wooden board and batten. We used Mitten’s Cypress vinyl and Richmond Red board and batten to best match the original colours of the home.
The wider trim boards were replaced with James Hardie Trim. The look is remarkably similar, but now the homeowners won’t have to worry about painting for a very long time. And the soffit/fascia/eaves were done in Gentek Graphite to match the Hardie Trims.
Finally, we also got to update the home’s building envelope while we changed the siding – sealing the windows with a peel and stick membrane and swapping the original black paper with Tyvek Drainwrap. And a layer of Plastifab Enerspan exterior insulation added some additional R value to the walls as well.
All-in, the gorgeous exterior has kept its original charm, but we’ve improved the seal on the building envelope, increased thermal value on the walls and added comfort for every season, and limited future maintenance on the home for years to come.
