Gray Slate Hardie Bungalow Renovation

We often get asked “what colour of siding will pair nicely with our existing red/orange brick?” There’s actually a lot colours that can pair nicely (think grays and blues for lots of options as a starting point), but when you look at this renovation, maybe the answer should just be, “Gray Slate!”

The new Gray Slate Hardie Plank and Panels look stunning against the brick (not to mention how they pair with that new natural wood accent at the front entrance!), but there’s plenty else to love on this one as well!

Before installing the new siding, we installed a layer of 1” exterior insulation, adding an R5 thermal value to the walls. On an older 2x4 home like this, that represents a roughly 40-50% increase in total R value! And as an added bonus, our exterior insulation is installed in a continuous layer over the existing studs, greatly minimizing thermal breaks. Goodbye to frost build up along the baseboards and hello to year round comfort!

After installing the insulation, we got to work on this beautiful combination of Hardie products. Hardie Panel and battens were used in a board and batten application, with 24” spacing along the front of the home. The wider spacing on the battens (we would most often be installing hardie battens around 16”) works very well on the long, ranch-style front of the home. On the sides/back of the home we installed Hardie Plank, providing a nice mix in texture and saving some cost from the more expensive board and batten application.

The homeowners absolutely nailed the details on this one, with a stunning mailbox, gorgeous new exterior lights, and even an update on the overhead door to match the renovation. And the monochrome colour scheme (matching Sturdimount penetrations for the light mounts, plugs, and hoses, corner trims, etc) only adds to the modern aesthetic. The end result is a cohesive and beautiful design that shows off the natural beauty of the home’s design.
