Replacing Vinyl Siding with Hardie Board
While it isn’t common anymore, the standard vinyl siding in Edmonton for a number of years was a wider reveal (as opposed to the 4” and 4.5” wide vinyl siding profiles we’re used to seeing now). That shift away from a wider profile was not due to taste (a lot of Edmontonians love a wider reveal siding), but function and cost as vinyl siding is not built to perform at that width, with very few exceptions.
And while that wider-reveal vinyl siding can be replaced with a new vinyl in a more narrow profile, there’s something really neat about replacing it with a similar look in a more modern product! In this case, we replaced the existing vinyl siding with 8.25” Hardie Plank in Arctic White. That 8.25” number can be a bit misleading if you aren’t familiar with the product - that’s the actual width of the plank, but each board overlaps 1.25” so you end up with a 7” reveal - very close to the siding we replaced.
The house retains its original charm, but it also gets all the benefits of upgrading to Hardie from a vinyl product. The woodgrain on each board is rich and detailed relative to the existing siding, and solid to the touch. And of course, the siding is non-combustible and hail resistant too!
Around windows and on the corners, the homeowners opted for a change up - going with the Hardie colour Peal Gray rather than a matching Arctic White. The end result is a little added character and pop to the design, and it really suits the home!
In addition to the siding upgrade, we added 1” of Enerspan exterior insulation, adding R5 to the existing walls. This represents a major increase in total R value on the walls, and as an added bonus - exterior insulation covers the studs of the home for minimal thermal breaks.
